Success is not when you make it. It is when you help someone else make it. – Rev. P.H. Carmichael.

Reverend Dr. Paul Heyward Carmichael
His Story

Rev. Carmichael with students.
Rev. Dr. Paul Heyward Carmichael is a 1949 graduate of Claflin University in Orangeburg, S.C. He received his honorary doctorate degree from Allen University in Columbia, S.C. inĀ 1960.
Rev. Carmichael was a pastor in South Carolina for more than 40 years and an educator for 30 years.
His parents passed away as a child and he was raised by his older sister and brother-in-law in the 1920s. Determined to disprove what he was told about a Black man not needing an education, he financed his education by rotating working a year and attending school a year until he received his degree from Claflin.
This program is named in memory of Rev. Carmichael because of his desire and determination to receive an education and because of his work as a pastor, educator and mentor.
